The Hancock Residences multifamily building in West Hollywood faced a unique challenge: designing a high-quality living space on a narrow lot (50 feet of street frontage and 121 feet deep). The project needed to meet zoning regulations while ensuring an exceptional quality of life for residents. The lot’s deep shape required innovative solutions for daylighting, ventilation, views, and privacy—key components in achieving a comfortable living environment.
Our team focused on maximizing the building’s functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. To address the challenges of the narrow lot, we introduced three primary gabled structures that rise vertically from the entry level, partially covering the roof. Oriented at a 45-degree angle, these structures create private balcony areas for each primary bedroom and help achieve the required step-back for the second story on the south elevation, ensuring ample light and air circulation.
The finished Hancock Residences is a striking multifamily building that balances modern design with resident comfort. The innovative use of gabled structures enhances the building’s daylighting, ventilation, and privacy while contributing to its sustainability and overall aesthetic appeal. The project successfully adapts to the constraints of the site, creating a functional and beautiful living space for its residents.
